28 March 2009

I think I may just take all the extra books to the Salvation Army or Good will. I posted these on many different websites, and no one has even checked into them! Oh well......

Or maybe I can even donate them to our school library.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Been at work the past three days. I'm ready for a minute off! Dh has a new job, and has been working tons of hours the past three days too! He's done 2- 12's and an 8 hour shift. He told me this morning, "Those are nurses hours! I don;t know how you do it, Honey!" LOL! Poor baby! It's nailed him, and he's pooped! (This may be a good thing though, so now he may realize just how tired I am when I get home, and not complain about me BEING so tired! LOL!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Today, I've not done too much of anything. Slept today from 8a-1:30p, then dh got home about 2:30p. We've been lazy today.

Tomorrow wil be a different story though. I have laundry to do, and  back to school after spring break (for the children) to prepare for!  Then I have MY first exam on Tuesday morning, then a  dosage calc exam on Tuesday afternoon.....it'll be ok though.

Nothing else terribly exciting going on around here though. I do need to balance the checkbook, and get some bills paid, but I'll do that when I have a bit of a straighter head on in the morning.

What are you doing today?

23 March 2009

I do have some great news! DH finished 2 of my rain barrels today!

Now, I'm ready for the rain! LOL!

After school tomorrow, I plan on going to Goodwill to see if I can find the children some clothes. Hopefully, we can. I bought Logan some shorts today at WM, at a good price, but if I can find some at GW, I'll take them back. Our GW really doesn't have too much in the way of young mens clothing, so we have to take what we can get!

Hot dogs and tater tots for supper cause I didn't set anything out for the crock pot....
Oh well~ the tummy will be full! LOL!
Blessings to you all!

22 March 2009

Well, the kids made it home ok. Amanda messaged me last night and told me they were home. I always say that the best part of any vacation is going home, and I think it's the same for Amanda and Steve. They liked to come visit, but after awhile, it was time to go. And that's ok and perfectly  understandable.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I made the Strawberry cake last night. Family ate most of it already! LOL! Abby stayed the night with friends from school, Amelia was ok last night... didn't try to bite anyones face off, and Logan... well, let's just say he's Logan. LOL!
It's back to the books tomorrow at school. I have my paper 98% complete. Just have to add a few references in the correct places and print it out! YEA! Then I have some studying to do to catch back up to speed with my nursing knowledge.
AAArrrrghghhhhhh! School work! :(  LOL!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am still using my laptop for most work and browsing the internet for the saving kwh. Desktops computers use 150 kwh of electricity perhour, and laptops only use 50 per hour. Dennis sis turn down my water heater to medium and I turned down the freezer and fridge to the warmest cooling setting.

As I keep reading my book, I'll bring more tips to the posts here.

But for now, I have some housework to do, so I had better go and get busy!

~Blessings!~

21 March 2009

My babies left today. All 4 of them. My daughter Amanda, her husband, Steve, and Jacen and Kyle, 2 of the most beautiful grandchildren on the face of this earth. I prayed as they drove away, asking the Lord to give them protection as they make the long journey home. I miss them already.

Jacen's little wagon that he had filled with toys and he pulled everywhere now sits in the rocking chair, still full of toys that needed to stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house, cause Mom and Dad had no where to pack them. Kyle's car seat that she used, sits still in Grandma's truck, waiting patiently to be taken out and stored once agian until another grandchild needs it.

A lone pair of red pants and a bottle of baby shampoo is all that remain from the time they were here.

It's a lonely and quiet home, but it was a joy filled and wonderful time together.

We have memories to carry us through and the telephone for calls. Somehow it just doesn't equal, " I love you Gwandma" in person, but we will manage. :)

I bought a book yesterday about being more frugal, "Go Green. Save Green" by Nancy Sleeth. I am reaching for being a better steward with my environment and with our money. Lots of great ideas for saving more and consuming less!

Today, I have done 3 loads of wash and have it out on the line drying, I am using my laptop more often, because it uses less electricity than my desktop, the desktop is turned off, the TV is off, and Dennis turned down the hot water heater for me. Maybe not ALL we can do to save, but it sure s a start, eh?

I am going to bake the Strawberry cake that was supposed to be for my grandson today and maybe make some biscuits for supper while the oven is on. We'll have leftovers for a meal tonight, and then hit the sack early. I asked dh if we could please go to church in the AM, so we are going to do that too. I am glad. We've been gone far too long, and I miss it.

I want to begin putting at least $25 a pay into savings, from mine and dh paychecks. If we can do that, we'll save $150 monthly. A good beginning, don't you think?

DS raked the backyard for me today, and is now out playing, middle dd is staying the night with a friend from school, and older dd is currently at work. She mopped the kitchen before she left, and it looks pretty gosh darn good! House is coming together after a week of vacation and not doing too much, and this evening, I have homework to do.

Such is the life at Hatfield House.....

What are your ways of being more frugal these days? Care to share?

19 March 2009

Here I am in the livingroom, on my laptop that Steve fixed (Thanks son!), and waiting patiently for a fussy little girl to go to sleep. She's merely fighting it, and nothing is wrong, per se.... cause when she's picked up, all is well, and the laughing and giggling begins. I know that Steve and the two littles have caught tremendous colds while here, and the only thing we can figure out is because of the weather change and humidity here as opposed to Colorado. I want them all well as soon as possible! It breaks my heart to see my family be down and out like that.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Bake Sale/ Open House went well, I think. The children did very well in telling what they had learned this year, and most of the baked goods disappeared quickly.
The new washer and dryer have been humming away the better part of the day, and believe it or not, I STILL have wash to do! LOL! Hopefully, I'll get it caught up tomorow.
We had some bad (weird) news today. Our sons (the 20 year old) ex high school girlfriend's obituary was in the paper. I have pictures of this girl going to high school dances with our son.... pictures of them together at cookouts here at the house, and so many memories. She was only 22.
Read ing that in thepaper this morning left a sad place this day......
22 years old.... the Bible does say that He comes like a thief in the night, right?
Well..... it's time to sign off here and bid my adeiu.
I am so tired, I do wish little bit would doze off soon..... I think I may just let her fuss a minute with the light off and see what happens.
Blessings my friends, and have peaceful dreams....
19 March 2009
We're having a wonderful visit with the grandbabies and dd and sil. Lots of laughter and happiness to go around, along with giggles and coloring pictures and time that moves way too quickly....
Our gs has been playing hard every day! One of his favorite activities is to climb in our wood pile out back.... I have video, but no still pics. LOL! But I did catch him when he came in from playing hard yesterday and after he sat down at his Mommy's feet....
Poor little man just tuckered himself out! LOL!
Of course, it wouldn't be complete without a shot of Grandma's little Princess....
Please excuse the red eyes....... I'm not a photoshop person that knows how to fix all those things....
Isn't she the most precious thing on the face of this earth? I think so too..... :)
Of course, we've also had fun playing on the Go Cart....
Here's Steve (my wonderful son in law) and Jacen....
And, of course, at the park, courtesy of Grandma and Grandpa....
And here's yet one more of the infamous "Ninja Grabber" as her Daddy calls her.... (and she does live up to her name! LOL!)
We're having a wonderful visit, and never want it to end......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Homestead happenings 'round these parts are:

I made 6 loaves of bread for a bake sale that the school is having today. We're going to the Open House from 6p-7p tonight and taking the grandchildren. Mommy and Daddy are going to a concert, so we get 'em ALL TO OURSELVES!! :)

My new washer and dryer are being delivered today. DH gave the approval and I got 'em! Yahoo! I know I shouldn't be so excited, but I am... yes, it's another bill.... but gosh darn it! My old ones still work, but they aren't really "cutting the mustard" anymore. The washer isn't really "wringing out" very well, and in turn, it takes the dryer forever to dry.... (which I didn't realize, cause the girls have been doing the laundry lately).

Ummmm...... I found a new Strawberry cake recipe that I am making today for everyone, and we're having pork chops in the crockpot for supper.....

Guess I've filled you all quite up to speed at Hatfield Farms here.... nothing much else going on!

Have a wonderful day and I will talk to you all later!

~Blessings!~

March 10, 2009

Beautiful dd came in my sewing room to talk last night and gave me quite a giggle... I looked down and saw these peeking from under her jammies....

Oh to be a teenage girl again! LOL!

She was trying to make her Momma not be quite so nervous about today...

Such a sweet girl...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first day of school went ok for me. It was long, and we had a few breaks, which helped, but I didn't sleep worth a piddly poo last night (in anticipation, I think), so I was incredibly tired today....
 I ran into the Director of the Nursing Program early in the AM, and it really made me feel good that she remembered my name from being my Pharmacology instructor many, many years ago! Shoot, she remembered all of our names.....
That made me feel more at ease almost immediately.
I already have homework to do for week after next, and a paper to write, so I'll get to crackin' on that tomorrow, I think.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was such a lovely day when I got home, that dh and I did some outside work, and our son got involved. He cleaned out and restacked the wood in a sturdier pile, so it doesnt look so *yuk* outside. He was a busy boy this afternnon, helping get some of the household chores done, and it apparently took its toll.... :)

He sat down to draw some pictures, and this is what we found a while later....

He's such a wonderful help (most of the time)!

We all ended up this way.... him, after working out in the yard, me, after working in the yard, and not sleeping well last night, and dh after driving to Kentucky last night! We pretty much wasted an entire beautiful afternoon....

LOL!

But it was all worth it.

~Blessings~

Back to school in the AM...

and I am one nervous nelly!

Here I am, 46 years old, wondering why in the world I am going back to school AGAIN... determined to finish that RN degree....

I'm scared. Scared that my brain is too mushy to remember my name, much less details of various disease processes, and the medications that can help or are detrimental at any given point.

Scared that my brain won't process the dosage calc that I do on almost a daily basis at work, that I'll freeze up when the instructor asks me a question. Or maybe that I'll contaminate my sterile field during a dressing change.....

What if I am TOO different than the other people in my class? What if I am the oldest and the only Grandma? What if I am the only one who bakes my own bread and sews clothes and worse yet... what if I am the only one that ENJOYS it?????

What if no one likes me because I am different? Because I wear my hair in a bun and wear blue jean jumpers 98% of the time?

All these questions and more infect the mind of a 46 year old homestead wanna-be Grandma.... and I am grown.

How many times these questions or ones nearly like them make our children nervous with changes they have to undergo in their lives? But yet we say... "Oh, you'll be alright." And for the most part, they are, as I will be. But it doesn't take away the gut wrenching fear that grips us before the inevitable happening before us.

Tonight, I will pray to my Lord and ask for peace, and I know He will give it to me. For right now, whether I am 46 or just 6, going to school scares the dickens out of me, and I need some comforting that only Jesus can provide....

Later in the day entry...

...still finds me piddling around the house, getting a bit done here and there. I forgot that dh had to drive to Kentucky tonight for his job, so I cannot take the curtains down from the bedroom and wash them. So, in place of that, the other laundry and rooms are getting a touch up! LOL!

And of course, I had to pick up the children from school this afternoon, then take dd to work....

Which of course, I am sure she's old enough to do, but not to load a wood stove, right? Haha!

Then, on to bigger things.... since I am starting school again tomorrow to finish up my RN degree, I needed a bookmark to give me incentive when I start to feel down, so I made this little gal to remind me of the Fruit of the Spirit when I get a bit grumpy from lack of sleep, lack of money, and lack of enough time in the day....

That it is only until December and that "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me...." Philippians 4:13.

Now, my precious younger dd is sweeping the floor in the living room and has dusted (which is backwards to me, but at least it is done, so I shall not complain...) and I am going to go and think of something for supper....

9 March 2009

Well, I did get my sewing room cleaned yesterday, in the midst of dd# 4 coming over to show off her new car.... a very nice one, really! And we are very proud! And gs playing and running through the house (a welcome sight and sound...).

Of course, then having a clean sewing room made me want to sew. So I made these 4 butterflies on my embroidery machine.

My favorites are the blue one and the orange one..... I see the big red, yellow, green and blue one on a granddaughters summer outfit in the near future! LOL!

Never did get the curtains washed though, so that'll be added to the project for today which is our bedroom. I'll just throw both sets in together!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My school starts tomorrow, so I had better get on track with menus for this house! Children get hungry, so the crockpot is gonna be a hummin' away a few nights a week....
We're on the countdown to DD # 3 coming to visit with her family and staying for a week! YIPEE!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Well, I'd best get busy for the day....

~Blessings~

8 March 2009

Good Sunday morning!

Yesterday was so lovely and breezy and warm, and now today we are expecting thundershowers again... but thundershowers are better than snow anytime! LOL!

I didn't get wash hung out yesterday like I wanted to, but I had worked the night before, and slept till 1pm! (I usually feel lazy the 1st day I am off!)

Hubby and I did get some grocery shopping done, so that makes me feel better. At least the cupboards are full again for the children coming home next week! YIPEE!!!

We also planned our gardens out for spring, and I plan on getting some seeds started today....

Today is also going to be "sewing room clean up" day... as in washing curtains and windows, and re-stacking fabrics in a proper manner so I can have some order in there! (looks like a tornado went through now...)! If I finish it up in due time, I plan on hitting the bathroom next and straightening cupboards and such. It's a small room, and doesn't need that much deep cleaning like the other rooms, so I may throw that one in with todays chores for good measure!

DH is probably going to need to just laze around today as his back is feeling quite pinched, and if he moves just one bit the wrong way, his back will go out and he'll be down for a couple of weeks! So I have him resting in his comfey chair with a hot pack to his back currently. He's got a cuppa coffee and watching a TV show..... gotta spoil my guy! (He's a good one!)  :)

Well, as you can see.. nothing much is planned for the Hatfield weekend, just typical chores.... but that's ok, that's exactly what we need! *smile*

What's on your agenda today? Have you started your "Spring Cleaning" yet?

5 March 2009

Well, it appears I've been attacked by trolls again.  Nothing big or new to me, as it has been done before, but the childish behavior that these people partake in is utterly rediculous! Writing nasty things about ones life or family, then, of course, refusing to leave their name along with the comment. Don't you think it may be more efffective to leave your name and a "real" reason behind your displeasure with the way I choose to raise my children? Then maybe we can discuss the issue as true adults would.

As far as my daughter needing to wake up and put wood on the fire, she is 16 years old, and when her father and I both have to work that night (not always the case~ 3 times in the past 6 months), she is nearing adulthood, and a bit of responsibility won't harm her teenage years in the least. What do you propose we do? Call off work and not pay our bills just so one of us can remain here and tend to the fire so she won't have to?

And we do have quite enough money to heat our home. But like many others, we are in search of new and frugal ways of living. Having a wood stove is one of our favorites. Chopping, hauling and stacking wood all year round is quite the chore and of course more time consuming than flipping a thermostat up, but that is the way we choose to live, and we like it. Just as raising our children with a bit of responsibility is our choice. We are not mean or abusive, but we do believe in a family working together as a family, and teaching a child to tend a fire or to cook meals is part of growing up in our book. They also garden, work during canning season, and are expected to hold decent grades in school (and they all do, thank you very much!).

As matter of fact, our 11 y/o son was named to the Honor Roll this past semester, and he hauls wood, chops wood, and helps with inside chores on a daily basis. :) Congrats Babe! I'm proud of  you!

Now, the daughter that responded to your comment, dear troll, is one of a kind. She worked an outside job from the time she was 14 years old, AND brought home excellent grades along with having other outside activities almost daily! How many other parents can say their DAUGHTER joined the Army and went to Intelligence training? And graduated? She is now married, with 2 beautiful children of her own, and raises them with pretty much the same convictions as her Dad and I raised her.

I don't think we are a failure as a family, we are simply different, and love being that way. We want to raise our children to be responsible, caring, God fearing adults, and if it takes a wood stove and getting up to tend a fire in the middle of the night, then that's what we'll do.

Thank you for reading....

3 March 2009

Morning!

It's definitely a chilly one here in Indiana, at a mere 8 degrees.

 The children are off to school, and my wonderful husband just got home from his driving job. He had to go to Kentucky last night. Wish I could have talked to him a bit more on his way, but my job was pretty pressing last night of its own.

Oldest dd let the fire die down a bit too far, now we have a cold house along with a cold outside. But dh is fixing us up.  We're having an obeying issue with the oldest. She just absolutely refuses to obey! We'll ask her to do something, and she'll just sit like she didn't hear us, or get up and go elsewhere and pretend she did her work or task, but we find later that she has not. It's out of hand, and we are at a loss. I, for one, am ready to shake her a good one! DH? Well, let's just say dh was raised a good part of his childhood by an ol true blue Kentucky hills Grandma that believed work was always done before play....

The worst part of it is.... now the younger daughter is trying to follow in her footsteps. We need to grab a foothold and now. Today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I accomplished cleaning out the oven yesterday and scrubbing the racks. The oven looks pretty good, if you ask me! :)
Now, I get to mess it up again and do some baking! LOL!
I think I'll bake some bread today and maybe an apple pie for dh, I don't quite know yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Weight Watchers hasn't been going too good for me lately. My mind can't get wrapped around it for some reason. Lazy, I guess.... I can't bring myself to journal and therefore, know how many points I have for the day.

I've been letting myself have too many points and tricking myself into thinking there aren't as many as there really are....

That's about it for the old Hatfield Homestead.....

What ya'll been up to lately?

Monday, March 2, 2009

2 March 2009

Well... March has sprung, but where is spring? LOL!

It's only 8 degrees here this AM... cold, cold, cold!!!!

Nothing exciting to report, just cleaning and re-arranging and getting prepared for when we can BE OUTSIDE without turning to icecicles! Haha!

We took down the birdfeeders yesterday and I washed them to prepare them for some seed for my babies, Dad has "finally" gotten around to helping me plan where to put my raised garden bed this year. (It's gonna be great!) and I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed the kitchen yesterday, moving the stove and fridge and cleaning under them. That in itself made me feel that I had accomplished a great deal! LOL! I vaccumed under the appliances and got enough dustball from under the fridge to stuff a pillow with.... hopefully, that'll help it run better or at least a bit more efficiently.

Dad put a feeder by the lilac bushes and filled it with seed for some cardinals that seem to want their nest there this year. YEA! I am so tickled about that too.

Other than that, nothing terribly exciting going on around here. Been working extra hours and have to go pay my school tuition for this semester today. That's a MUST so I can go! Only 3 semesters and I should have my RN. Can't wait! Then comes the harried process of paying all the loans back, right? *Blech!*

But I guess we shall survive. We always do. By the Grace of God, we always do.

I found a reading plan for the Bible that I like. I read the Old Testament, New Testament and  one or two Psalms a day. I really need a schedule to keep me on track, otherwise I don't do anything at all.... and the good Lord above, deserves more than what I could ever give, doesn't He?

Well.... I'd better go and get in the shower. Have alot to do today before work tonight. Going in at 10p to pick up a few hours. Hopefully that'll help the bills some, eh? ;)

So tell me what you've been up to... anything exciting? :)
