I'm afraid I'm not too savvy on this issue, but I surely would like to learn.
We have 3 children still at home, ages 14, 12 and 9. I am thoroughly upset with the school system, and would like to approach homeschooling, but I have no idea where to begin!
We are barely scraping by as far as money goes, and I surely cannot spend any money on a set curriculum. Hubby is disabled and we are living on his disability right now. I am a LPN, unemployed, and currently taking care of my ill Mother who lives with us.
Where do I begin? If I could even supplement schooling that they ARE learning, that would surely help!
I'm afraid that I haven't been the best role model for my children as far as my Christian walk goes, but I am getting better every day, and am seeing the need of my family to come first. But I am afraid I didn't start soon enough.
My 14 year old daughter is being influenced by so many things, and has hit the eye rolling stage and deliberate defiance stage. I don't imagine that there's too awful much I can do about this stage except guide her as gently as I can, and pray alot!
The 12 year old is a pretty good gal, who listens and (usually) doesn't grumble.
Our 9 year old is a hyperactive child, currently on ADHD medication. He has many learning issues that we work on together, and has gained knowledge by leaps and bounds with wonderful teachers and helpers in his school. But then again, he is only in 3rd grade. Most teachers still care at this point.
I guess he's the one I am most worried about. We believe he has emotional and mental issues (stemming from abuse and prenatal drug/alcohol exposure before he came to us at age 5).
Doctor wants him in counseling, but husband and I do not believe in that.
These are reasons I am at a loss as to what to do. I want to take charge of raising our children, but so many issues are standing in my way.
Some days are simply not worth worrying so much about.
Start with prayer.
ReplyDeleteWe prayed one full school year before we pulled out kids out.We asked for God's guidance, we asked for clairity of mind and spirit. We asked God to lead us to what and how to home school. We prayed every day for 180+ days.
Start reading Scripture of obedience. Let God speak to you and your heart......
Start praying over your kids.
Let God speak to you in His timing.....let Him lead!

HOmeschooling doesn't have to be expensive. You don't have to use packaged curriculum like ABEKA. You can simply learn by reading good quality literature. My children absolutely LOVE history and literature because that is the approach that we took. It is real and exciting to them, rather than a bunch of dry facts. We use a skeleton curriculum, I guess you would say (it is called Beautiful Feet), but I can get alot of the books that it calls for at the library. I use the guide for answers and direction.
ReplyDeleteAbout your daughter, I want to tell you a quote that I underlined in a book I recently read. It is called When You Rise Up, by R.C. Sproul, Jr. "The answer to "My children don't respect me" is "And they never will as long as you send them off to some school to have someone else raise them."
She might disrespect you, but because she is gone all day and you are away from the problem, the problem (her attitude toward you) is still there. I must say that peer influence alone is one reason we are so glad that we homeschool. I can truly tell you that my husband and I are best friends with our children (15 and 17). They DO have attitudes sometimes (because they are sinners like I am), but that is not the norm. I would say that building your relationship with her would be a wonderful thing to do.
I love homeschooling and would be happy to encourage you or help you in any ways. And I will pray for God's leading..
Blessings,
Patti
there is a book calling something like "homeschool for free" do an amazon search. depending on where you live, your local library might have a copy, or a local homeschool group....
ReplyDeletedo it!!! :):):)
You can use the library for everything, well, you would need to pick up pencils and paper somewhere else! :) The two books the other commenters named are very good, the second one is Homeschool Your Child For Free and is by LauraMaery Gold & Joan M. Zielinski. They have some really good ideas and the second book has lots of websites for every subject imagineable. To get a scope and sequence (if you want one), just go to a publisher's web site (Bob Jones, A Beka, Alpha Omega, etc). They usually have those somewhere on their sites, explaining what they cover each year for each subject.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps,

Oh, I know you can homeschool. If God is giving you the sign, then He will make it possible! There are bunches of websites out there on how to homeschool with little to no money..I think one is called Education on a Dime,,,just start using your search engines! Just remember, you know your kids better than anyone except God, and He will give you the tools necessary! We are raising saints, not scholars (but that doesn't mean we can't do both!). Good luck in your searching!
